The Fonze move to start the car.

I have a 2001 grand am. Have had trouble is the past with the security system going on when you start it. So we had to the ten min wait thing down. Now when we start the car we have to bang on the dash right above where the key is for it to start. The key is in the start position when we do this. And I don't mean a one tap... Its a few mins of banging sometimes. Very hard to keep cool when trying to leave and you have to bang on the car for a few. Also now the key can be wiggled out when it is not supposed to. Need any more info? -- Rich in Ohio

Re: The Fonze move to start the car.

that is why I will do push button start, one switch will control accessories and ignition contact and the other push button will be used for starting. Accessories switch will be hidden. I will completely remove the steering wheel lock and it will be completely key-less start. Theft system will be bypassed with a resistor.

Not sure what theft system you have, is is small resistor in the Key? If not, then it could be ignition cylinder not making connection with the resistor inside or there is microprocessor inside of your Instrument panel cluster that can go bad and will not read pass lock code.

Thank you for the reply. I'm not sure about the security. Nothing fancey on the key, unless its hidden in the handle. Sounds like I may have to take the car to the dreaded dealership $$$.

Re: The Fonze move to start the car.

Welcome to AF RooferR!

Sounds like a bad ignition lock cylinder and key, or the ignition switch. No chip in the keys.
Typical of these newer cheaper plastic lock cylinders, parts get damaged easily.
Also if you have a to much weight hanging on your keychain, this can cause simular problems. If so remove excess stuff and see how it does.

If no change you'll need to test and replace the bad parts.
And here is a link for the test procedures.

My 99 SE has over 200K on the stock ignition switch and cylinder. I like how I can remove the key while its running. lol

Good Luck

I'm thinking of doing this repair myself... The dash has to come off? Not just the stearing column?
