Does anyone have any advise on a starting problems I am haveing with my 97 Blazer S10
Hi,
My 97 Blazer is exhibiting a frustrating pattern. If I don't use it for two or more days, it will not start. Especially if its wet or damp out, the car will turn over and sound like its going to start but most time doesn't. The battery drains down and I have to jump it. Once I hook it up to my other car, it will kick over, sputter and start every time. It sounds like not all the cylinders are firing until it gets full power from another car. During the start-up process, I can hear it misfiring and then it slowly starts to sound better and then sounds and runs great. It is like moisture is getting into the electrical system somewhere. This is a high mile Blazer and the check engine like goes on and off but mostly stays on. I have not brought it in yet for service. I was going to change plugs and wires first. Does anybody have any thoughts??? Thank you! |

Usually when problems happen in the damp it is distrubor cap or wires. Since its high mileage and if you do not know when last changed, I would do cap, & rotor, plugs and wires. The middle plug on drivers side is tough search this forum and it will show you how to remove steering shaft or just leave that one for now until you get better starting and do that one another time.If it does not help you need to verify proper fuel pressure, there is a shrader valve back near the distributor which a guage hooks up to and I believe the spec is 62-66 psi any lower and injectors do not fire properly. The fuel pump is very sensitive to battery voltage, excessive cranking causes low voltage low pressure, jumping adds another vehicles battery increases voltage and can increase fuel pressure. Also search for the ignition key switch that many 97's had problems with I know they can cuse a bunch of problems not sure if starting is one. Good Luck

I second the distributor cap. Remove the cap and look for moisture inside of the cap or in the distributor, also check for cracks and holes in the cap. If you see any moisture, get Mama's electric blow dryer and an extension cord and "Dry" the disributor. If you do have moisture inside the cap replace it. It is very simple to replace the cap, just remove one wire at a time.

Just kidding, I agree. (removing the wires is easy, getting them back in the correct position is the ultimate goal) As Rick said and I'll expound, replace the wires 1 at a time with the new cap next to the old cap; remove from old, insert in new.

Mine did that, finally quit, replaced the fuelpump, and purrss everytime now. (did a whole bunch of tests first to trace the problem) Like others post, do some tests, voltage fuel psi, etc. (didn't replace cap, rotors, plugs, or anything, just eliminated one thing ata time) Hooked up the fuel pump test lien and it didn't go, the relay was fine, and the engien started if there was fuel, jsut dided because there was no fuel gettign to the engine. It's fun figuring out your woes... this is the best palce for awesoem support and answers. |
