Adusting distributor timing on 22R-E
What position should the crankshaft pulley be 0 or 5 degrees BTDC on a 22R-E engine when adjusting the position of the distributor so that it's rotor points to spark plug point contact # 1 on the compression stroke?.
As I purchased this 1995 4-Runner back in January and believe that when prior owner had his mechanic replace the headgasket along time ago because of green Prestone high silicates coolant he didn't position the distributor gear at the correct tooth or the chain might of been installed one tooth off.Thanks. i'd pull dist. and make sure the rotor is pointing to numer one in dist. cap.but you need to make sure but get piston up on number one before you install i'm sure you know that.and another thing it could be 1 tooth off but it should run unless 2 or 3 teeth are off.

I bought a used timing light and with the check engine/timing connector (TE1) and E1 shorted I noticed the timing wasn't at 5 degrees BTDC but instead around 10 so I re-adjusted the position of the distributor while engine is running and got it back down to 5 degrees BTDC.
I took it for a short test drive around the block and it seems fine, tomorrow morning I will see if she still has difficulty starting cold, missing/bucking under load specially and highway speeds and see if she has power. If problem remains could the distributor or timing chain have been installed one tooth off? and still allow me to use a timing light and be able to adjust to 5 degrees BTDC?. i would still get the piston up on number one and see if rotor button inside cap is pointing to number one.if you don't could cause you it to not run like it's supposed to to..good luck...
