Have you checked under the hood to see if any mounts or brackets have come off, or are actually missing? In some of these cars, the motor (which is in the front) must be jacked up to change spark plugs or alternator. Perhaps when someone did this, they failed to put back some key mounting hardware they removed. Also, supposing that one of the cylinders is misfiring (not firing sometimes). This could indicate dirty or burnt out spark plugs. Pull the front 3 plugs while the engine is off and take a good look at them (or get a mechanic to do it). Here's a good guide to checking sparkplugs yourself at this link: http://www.aa1car.com/library/sprkplg2.htm You may need new plugs (or perhaps also sparkplug wires and/or a coil). Its best to check out these things, because at best you are probably burning gallons of gas without getting any good mileage. Regarding sparkplug WIRES, you should read this article here: http://www.rd.com/familyhandyman/content/59050/ They explain what happens when WIRES burn out, and why you should replace them before this happens. The extra shaking when you brake could indicate you are down to the metal with the brake pads or maybe there is some oil or other contaminant on the pads/rotors. This means its time to pull a wheel off and inspect at least the front (disc) brake pads and rotors. Other contributors to vibration (at plus 50 mph) might be that one of your tires has thrown a balancing weight off. Tires are normally balanced after being installed on the rim by the use of little weights clipped to the rim edge. If one comes off then the tire is unbalanced and will vibrate when going over 50 mph. You can get good info about balancing and rotating tires here: http://theserviceadvisor.com/tire-care.shtml |
