Question Intermittment whining sound

Chevy 2000 Impala -- whining sound comes on sommetimes, not all the time. Slight hard shift when it occurs. Sounds like the sound airplane flaps make when airbrakes are extended. Can drive 1000 miles nd not hear it. The, can drive 20 miles and it comes on. Dealer can't diagnose -- has heard the sound. But says just to keep following it. Any thoughts?

Hello--How many miles on your car? Also how long since you flushed and serviced the transmission? Does it only do it as you take off from a stop, possibly sounding like it was staying in low gear too long?

95000 mi. Had dealer check trans 4 mos ago and he said it was fine. Does not always make whine from stop. And when it occurs it does so at all RPMs. But harder to hear at higher speeds.

A friend says Cadilacs do this. He says its probably a loose bearing on one of the components connected to the serpintine belt. The sound comes from the front of the car.

FYI -- my dealer is very honest. I am in a small town in Iowa (pop 5000). He has never charged me to diagnose this probelm yet nor tried to sell me anyting (like a new trans). So I trust him. It's just intermittent -- hard to pinpoint.

With 95,000 miles on it, have you had the transmission serviced (flushed , new filter and fluid)? Not sure what you meant when you say the dealer checked it.

Others may not agree, but I would have the Chevy dealer do it, as opposed to an oil change place or trannie shop. May cost a little more, but the right fluid will go back in. Regards from over in NE.

Yesterday, had complete transmission service at the dealer -- first ever for this car (now at 95,000). No problems. Service manager said, "We didn't even find any 'pieces' down at the bottom" -- whatever that means. Now we'll see if our intermittent whining sound -- that resembles the motors on aircraft flaps -- will come back.

Regards, NE. Sorry 'bout the Huskers in the CWS. Next year!!

Re: Intermittment whining sound

the whine is from your fuel pump.

It cost us $700 to get a new fuel pump, and pressure regulator (It was under warrenty) and it quit making the sound, then it started a month later.

if you take the small vacuum line (top right of the pcv valve) the sound will quit.

What do you mean "take the small vacuum line"?

do i need to say it again?

it is the fuel pump.

If you take the vacuum line for the fuel off, the whining sound will quit.

you hear the sound at the bottom right because that is where the fuel lines are, go back by the gas tank, and you will hear it worse.
