99 Windstar ABS/Speedometer/Odometer
My ABS light came on and at the same time my speedometer and odometer quit working...what to do? I have had a complete brake job done from Midas and my light is still on.

Do you mean the speedometer stays at 0? Analog gauges? Model year, engine, mileage? You be specific, and analytical, . . . . we can help.

Re: Re: 99 Windstar ABS/Speedometer/Odometer
There is a speed sensor on the transaxle, hard to get at, but you can reach it from underneath, it is on the top of the transaxle, toward the rear of the van. Check the connection, two wire plug. I recently replaced mine, speedo would go to "0" and cruise would shut off while driving. There is also a sensor at each wheel for the ABS system, perhaps they left one disconnected, checking these wires is pretty simple.

If it was a bad fuse then it wouldn't even power up.... There would be no display at all on the odometer and none of the gauges would work.

Re: 99 Windstar ABS/Speedometer/Odometer
I just bought a 99 and it has the same problem you do. It has to do with fuse #10 in the kick penal. Mine keeps blowing so I had to take it to the dealer for diagnose. They found a short related to the speed control unit replaced it and Speedo & Odometer works and abs light went away. Try replace the #10 fuse and turn the key to on and you should see the Odometer (miles). If the fuse does not blow, this should take care of your problem. Hope this helps. Good luck....

ABS light only
I have had the ABS light on my 99 Windstar that comes on periodically. Each time I take it to the garage for them to look at it they haven't been able to "make" it come on so they can figure out the problem. The car drives fine & I've had regular maintenance on the van. Including new front brakes in December.
I've just been ignoring it since it comes and goes. Is that a bad thing? Should I be worried about this? What should I do about it? Thanks |

Re: 99 Windstar ABS/Speedometer/Odometer
On the bottom of your Brake master cylinder, there is a brake pressure switch that has multi functions.First, it cuts out the speed control if you step on the brake pedal while using it, second, it will lite up the dash lite for brakes if pressure drops while you are braking. Try disconnecting the plug under the pressure switch and replace the fuse, if it doesn't blow, you know its at fault.
