lambo doors

i know that the dream of many people would be to somehow create your own sissor doors without spending the 1500 or more dollars on a professional kit. are the parts that this would require going to cost a buttload anyway? i personally would like to have strong sturdy lambo doors on my z, that i could open and close consistantly as a daily driver. i'm sure it could be done custom, but with what amount of effort and cost?

Re: lambo doors

Lots of effort involving the triginometry to get the hinge to pivot correctly. Expense would probably be under a grand for sure. Thats considering you build it entirely yourself.

If deciede on akit, remember they are not all created eqaul...if you are going to attempt a custom conversion like that, make sure you know what you are getting into before you do it. By this I mean Lambo doors may look neat, but they can be a pain during daily driving, even if they are strudy and work correct. When you're at a gas station or McDonalds, or parking for work, the last thing you want to do it pop the doors and open them up...It may seem cool at first but eventaully you may get sick of it. If you buy a kit you can sell it and re-coupe some of the $$...or uninstall it and then re-install it later on if you change your mind. If you do a custom conversion it may cost less, but chances are if you undo it you can't sell it...and who knows how hard it will be to undo. It can get annoying as anything...you never realize the joy not having people look at you when you open your doors...the joy of just opening your door quickly, getting out and slamming it shut until it's no longer possible.

Anyways, if you want to make them go ahead, I just wanted to throw some thoughts out there before you went out did all that hard work of designing some!! I've talked to several people who back in the day did their own custom conversions before the bolt-on craze. All of them said it was harder and more work that it was worth, and as GTMike said....they all said that the geometry to get it to work right took forever and was hard. On top of that, they all go sick of popping them up...I know of 2 cases where the guy un-did them after a year or so and returned them to stock.

I hope these thoughts are of some help.
