Warm weather,make subs hit harder???
I have heard from a friend that warm weather will make his subs hit harder. He says that his battery is warmer, etc..etc.. I dont see how this makes a difference. The subs pretty much make thier own heat, which generally doesnt make a difference. Amps get warm as usual, ok? I dont understand why warmer/hotter is betterthan cool, or cold?

well, when the weather is warmer, your windows are open, and that always makes your music sound better.....
but i doubt thats what he's talking about; sounds kinda cracked up to me |

Re: Warm weather, make subs hit harder???
Once everything warms up I can't imagine there being any difference at all. Maybe at first there is, when it's cold the suspension is more stiff and the cone won't move as far, which would decrease the output slightly until the sub warmed up.

subs are more efficient in cool weather. not at first, but once they warm up they are. heat is the enemy.

Re: Warm weather, make subs hit harder???
more amps from battery if your system is running on the edge....plus i don't know how far any of you got in physics but its a proven fact that spl will slightly rise in warm weather because the air particles move faster and collide better....and this is by a noticeable amount we did experiments proving this.

I think about it like a car. Cars work better in cold air, the air is thicker, air glides through the air intake better. Unlike in the summer, where the air just whips through. (mainly why they make cold air intakes). But this to me seems almost vice-versa for subwoofers/amps. I understand the concept that the suspension of the subwoofer would be stiffer cold, but slightly more spl? how much are we talking about? And what kind of experiment was it that proved this theory right. Seriosuly, i think this "Subs hit harder when its warm" stuff is a figment of our imagination.
Now unless someone does an actual test with a db meter in their car @ night, when its pretty cool, or cold outside and then try when its 70-75 outside and notices or actually concludes that it does, then pound hard in the summer. |

Re: Warm weather, make subs hit harder???
I know when it is cold that your coils dont extend as well, that's why the user manual suggest you do not use them in the cold b/c your sub will bust. As far as it hitting harder in the warmth i dont have a clue. I believe it's all in the setup, and what kinda car you have.

Re: Warm weather, make subs hit harder???
Physics states that sound waves travel at 343m/s at 20 degrees celcius, or 70 degrees fahrenheit. Rising or lowering the temperature affects the sound speed, but only by a small fraction. Since the amplitude of the wave effects the sound pressure level and not the speed, the more force put into the subwoofer, the louder, but only till it reaches its limits. How fast it hits only affects the sound quality in the long run.

Tim quit tryin to contradict everything i say my system hits harder at 320 everyday then it does at 730 in the morning and if u don't believe me come over at 30 and listen to it then listen to it afer school and tell me what hits harder.

Re: Warm weather, make subs hit harder???
So, your speakers work better when they are left on for 24hours or an extended period of time do to warm up time, but I doubt this has anything to do with SPL

aren't spl comps really short? like 5 or 10 second bursts? well i never really been to one, but i seen a few videos, like one that was a 5 or 10 second burst, that got 170db and cracked a door, so it shouldn't effect that too much right?

Like that guy said earlier in this thread. Only a small fraction is more audible at warmer temperatures then cold. SMALL FRACTION, what does this mean? Does it mean a noticeable difference or so small its a figment of our imaginations? I have have systems, not great ones, but have had them in teh summer and then in the winter and never noticed a difference, thats why i think this is kind of being blow out of proportion.
OK MAYBE THEY DO HIT HARDER BUT TO WHAT AUDIBLE DIFFERENCE? NOTICEABLE? THAT IS THE DEBATE! |

Re: Warm weather, make subs hit harder???
It's all because of the windows being rolled down in the summer... that's the only noticeable thing.
