P402

Me Again,
I had the mechanic put my van on the scan-tool to read a check engine. It said it was the A/C. Got him to reset the PCM and wait to see if it comes back.It came back on, and now it reads P402, and has something to do with EGR flow excessive. I'm starting to wonder if my PCM may be randomly throwing out false codes. But anyway, how difficult is it to clean the EGR ports, and what tools/time would be required to do the job?

Thanks
DIon

Re: P402

NOt too sure about the 96 ports but on some models you have to take the upper intake off to get to the ports.

Do keep in mind that the DPFEs (the device that determines EGR flow) are prone to fail.

Mine failed and was reporting excessive flow. Being an electronics person myself I drilled out the rivets and found an open between the external pins and the PC board. A bit of solder and some small bolts and I was back in business. Testing the DPFE is relatively easy. Do a search as I outlined the procedure a while back.

Checking the DPFE is easier that getting to the ports as a first step.

Re: P402

Clogged EGR ports would be more likely to cause insufficient EGR flow. So I would be more suspicious of the DPFE. Yes, the '96 3.8L does have the EGR ports in the lower intake manifold....1 for each cylinder....and you remove the upper intake manifold to get to them.
