Question Check Engine Code P0446

I have a 2001 Camry. The check engine light recently came on. I brought the car to the dealer to have them take a look at the problem. The dealer said the problem was that I overfilled the gas tank. When I got the car back the check engine light no longer came on.

About a week later, the check engine light came back on. I had not refilled the gas tank since I had taken the car to the dealer. I found out that Check Engine Code P0446 was the problem.

I have some questions concerning this particlular check engine code.

Is this something serious that needs to be taken care of right away?

What is the cause of this problem and can it be fixed by the dealer?

How much does this problem cost to repair?

Thanks for any help with this problem.

Re: Check Engine Code P0446

The error code P0446 means "EVAP System - vent control malfunction". This error code can be caused by any of the following :

Open or short in VSV circuit for EVAP
VSV for EVAP
Open or short in vapor pressure sensor circuit
Vapor pressure sensor malfunction
Open or short in VSV circuit for vapor pressure sensor
Malfunction in VSV for vapor pressure circuit
Vacuum hose blocked, damaged or disconnected
Charcoal canister malfunction...

I do think that this is something that you should look into having repaired as soon as possible to prevent further engine problems. Also, this might possibly hender your gas mileage and engine performance.

Re: Check Engine Code P0446

Usually, if you overfill the tank once, it will soak the charcoal canister with fuel causing the need for it to be replaced.
I would try a used canister first (if you can locate one), if it fails, then buy a new one.
