Lights left on alarm?

Hello gang,I hope you all are well. On my old cars,I am trying to install a warning alarm so that I don't leave the headlights on. I don't want the irritating buzz sound,I am looking for a nice audible chime. So what does the warning sound from your car sound like?
thanks
Paul

Re: Lights left on alarm?

Newer Ford products have a pleasant lights on chime. But most newer cars have the chime built-in to a multi-function module, so you're not likely to find something simple that you can just grab from a salvage yard and install in your car. Are you planning to build your own device and are looking for examples of what chime to simulate/model?

Re: Lights left on alarm?

I just use a piezometer- one wire to parking light fuse, the other to any ignition fuse. When ignition goes off, it becomes a ground to sound the piezometer. Wire it right at fuse box. Not so much a chime as it is a tone. If too loud, I wrap it in tissue paper. They are cheap on E-bay.

Yeah thanks. On my 1992 Ford Sierra and audible sound were installed from factory. Since the scrapyards don't have Sierras in these days,I was hoping to pull the relay off a later car regardless of Marque, and wire them in my old cars

The piezometers I have seen, look too big, ideal for industrial use

Re: Lights left on alarm?

My piezometer is about the diameter of a quarter and about 1/4 in thick.

Are you looking for this alarm for your 1992 Sierra, or a different car? If for he Sierra, are you sure the problem is the chime rather than the door ajar switch or key cylinder switch? It seems both of the inputs to the lights on alarm would see more use than the alarm and therefore may be more likely to fail. Maybe the alarm module is still perfectly functional.

Hi Rod,not just for the Sierra, for my older cars. It is to avoid forgetting to switch off the headlights. When I exit the car,it gives off an audible chime.

Re: Lights left on alarm?

Okay. I was thinking I might be able to confirm whether or not the Sierra chime is built into something like the Generic Electronic Module and if the sensors to trigger were easy to access, but I don't have access to wiring diagrams for the Sierra and I'm not sure the XR4Ti that was sold here is similar enough.

Re: Lights left on alarm?

It is recognised as a relay. I've managed to get a few when Sierras were in scrapyards

Re: Lights left on alarm?

Hi Paul,

That sounds like a great project! On my current car, the warning chime is a soft, pleasant series of beeps, almost like a digital doorbell. It's not annoying and does the job perfectly. Have you checked out aftermarket chime options? There are some great choices out there that offer a gentle reminder without the harsh buzz.

Good luck with your installation!
