I helped a good friend to break in his new Lotus Exige, the big sister to the Elise, at the Waterford Hills track near Auburn Hills in Michigan.

It's a fabulous car. There's a slightly off-camber hill turn on the back side of the track where I'm sure that my S2000 would be airborn. The Exige not only stuck but we were able to change line after the crown of the hill. If you screw up a turn, just point it where you wanted to be and you're there in a flash. We were able to pass a lot of other cars during our sessions and still keep the rpm's below the break in limit.

I thought that the gear box was a little sloppy but there's a fix for that. Otherwise, it's a fabulous car. Oh, did I tell you that it's a fabulous car?

jsb88,

It depends, if it's your first "track car" (Exige not being legal for USA roads), there is the additional cost of diesel truck, truck insurance, covered trailer, trailer cabinets, trailer fuel frames, tie-downs, speed jack, jack mounts, lots of others and trailer insurance.

It can take a US$50k car to a US$100k investment very quickly indeed.

I'm buying my new truck and trailer on the cheap but it's still a lot of US$.

Abarth

crayzayjay,

Seeing your Abarth avatar recalled a treasured friend's recent purchase. He's going to go Vintage racing with it. I think it's a SIMCA Abarth??? Whatever it is, it's supposed to be damn fast for an old car with well under 2 litres. Damn ugly too!

Yeah, the SIMCA Abarth was a feisty little f*cker all right! It had a very successful racing career too. I wouldnt call it ugly , in fact i think it's a very good looking car. Looks like a mini-Ferrari to me, absolutely gorgeous and one of my favourite designs

whatcha think of that?

Simca Abarth

crayzayjay,

Oh, sorry for not telling the story fully. It's not one of those cherished little beauties at all. They're running in the US$200K + range here (USA).

His is one of only two prototypes known to exist. It is an aluminum four-door sedan built on their standard steel chassis. The other example resides in Japan. He's got no real way of telling what it's worth but it is a fine chunk of automotive history. However, it's f*cking ugly.

I think that this prototype was intended for rally. The addition of all the frontal lighting just adds more clutter to already tragic aesthetics.

I don’t have any photos but can you imagine a bigger and more ugly A112?

I did not at all intend to be critical of the rest of this family of classically beautiful cars.

I hope your blood pressure has returned to "normal."
