second, never buy a ported box that doesnt have the port facing the same way as the sub. the box is extremely important to how it sounds, you can loose major spl and sq from a box. I helped a friend out that had a 12 in a q logic 1.25 ported box. it was a good sub, but it didn't hit at all. he was mad, we made a custom box according to manufacture specs, and it was muuuuuuuuuch louder, 2.0 cu ft, and the port on the same wall as the driver, not like the Q logics, and he was alot happier. usually when they give a range, like 1.5-2, its better to make it the bigger size. companies know small boxes are in, so they say a smaller number than ideal to push there product.
what do you mean its better to make it the bigger size? what if you need to save room? usually people make it bigger because they have room to spare, and it also gives the subwoofer more room to resonate, if the box is too big it won't sound good, if its too small it won't sound good, it is up to the person, not just "the bigger box is better"

if the company lists 1.5-2.0 it will sound better/louder in the 2.0. i didnt' say throw it in a 3.0. if you cant make it at least 1.7 (1.5+ sub displacement)look for a different sub, i believe the one he listed said for 1.5-2.0. you should also figure in port displacement

yes the bigger box is better for sq/spl. smaller is better for taking up less space, thats it...they only list smaller sizes because they know that thats whats in. it'll still work just fine, just not as well, and im not making this up, its strait from a few of the subwoofer designers ive talked to. you adjust the port for listening preference.

you will get quit a bit more from the ported box, but your welcome to try a small sealed box, ive seen it before, and ive fixed it before. most loudpeakers are designed for ported boxes

which sub are you going with? 1st one or 2nd?

the first you could do a 1.3cu ft box, ported, and its not much bigger than your planned 1.0. second, id do 1.5 cu ft, still not a whole lot bigger. you already going with a smaller 10" sub, your not going to get a lot of output, use the box to get the most you can from it.

if you do decide to go ported, find out what size port, and how deep. make sure the ports on the same side as the driver. if the port was to be 8" deep, the box must be at least 12", if it was to be 6", at least 9" deep (1.5 the port length) a little more space is always better.

ports can be sensitive, longer ports tune it lower btw.

Mike, you are not completely correct about your larger box better theory. Some subwoofers just perform better in smaller boxes. They are made for it. For example the Elmental subs. A larger box adds a lot more to the low end, but it doesn't really effect the subs high end performance.

Re: Sub question

Haibane see i cant do that to my bed i use it for loading my quad and hauling stuff so unless you convert you bed to a gaint sub box trucks are musicly challenged since theres no real good place to mount amps and subs

Re: Sub question

yeah, some subs are better for smaller boxes, but in my experience, when a manufacture recomend a range, the bigger in that range is usually better. if all else fails, email the company. ive done this for port tunning. told them the box demensions, and what size port/vent gives what hz. sometimes the companies dont give that info up so easy (just being lazy)

well certain companies need smaller boxes, usually for quality, but like for alpine, the customer service rep told me it just won't sound good... but for kicker the bigger the box is.. usually its better ya know? depends on the sub mostly
