Re: The McLaren F1 Owner's Club

I hadn't previously noticed that 07R still had it's nose NACA ducts, do we know of any other 1995 cars still wearing them?

Re: The McLaren F1 Owner's Club

Doesn't seem like these videos have been shared here yet.

These were taken of the cars rolling out on the first day of the drives, a short distance from the hotel. I didn't know who this guy was, but remember walking past him that morning and it seemed like he was trying to conceal the fact that he was filming. I thought that was funny because it was a public place. I do like the perspective of his wide angle in the second vid.

Re: The McLaren F1 Owner's Club

I met this guy last year at Pagani factory, cool dude, a real petrolhead! When I saw these two videos I was like "how the hell did he managed to discover the location?"
Plus, as you say, they were there at day one, so they managed to sort it out sooner than me!

Anyway, some great photos has been shared here, you guys have done an incredible job!

Re: The McLaren F1 Owner's Club

This was really the second day of the Tour - the first day the cars and owners were arriving at the Villa and there were no drives planned.

It's possible he received the tip from the two people who did show up on the first day - Matteo from SwissCarSightings or Simone from Caldicarphoto. Matteo never told me how he learned of the location, but he brought Simone along with him. One of them could have also told this guy - either that or he knows someone else who was involved? Doesn't really matter as it wasn't a problem.

Lucky for him anyway given the small number of people who had this opportunity. I still admire your methods.

Re: The McLaren F1 Owner's Club

Now I remember his name, Matteo...anyway, the cool thing about him is that, no matter how he get the tip, he went there alone, he kept the "secret"....I mean, Matteo knows Marchettino pretty well, he could have passed the info to one of the biggest carspotter on YT, and it would have been a much crowded place, maybe ruining the gathering's atmosphere

I agree.

Some people on Supercarfrance.com don't understand that...

If you are suggesting the guy shooting those two videos is Matteo, then he would be a different person than the Matteo I was talking about. And yes - it is probably a very good thing the event didn't end up being trailed by a gaggle of car spotters the whole time.

First of all, we certainly did enjoy this set, it is just incredible. Plus these pictures revive so many memories, and we can see that the design is not affected by time (the same could not be said for a Bugatti EB 110 for instance, just my opinion of course).

This being said, I cannot help but notice that on the two models above, the configuration is one that never existed. For instance, the bonnet on the Art car is the one of the 95 Le Mans kit, while the radiator inlets are those of the 1995 GTR presentation car, and the opposite on the other car.
In the end, there are endless possibilities of configurations.
Off-topic there, but would it be thinkable to switch a long-tail into a short-tail, and vice-versa?

Re: The McLaren F1 Owner's Club

Very good observations.

GTR #07R was involved a low speed front-end accident during the time Larry Kinch owned it and the lower front radiator panel was replaced then with the updated part that included the larger ducts. This may have coincided with the car being fitted with larger radiators given that it was also road converted.

On #05R Ray mentioned he has extra pieces of bodywork for the car so perhaps the 'correct' bonnet cover with those ducts is around somewhere? That GTR raced for 4 season and at some point when it wore the Pink/Black Italjet livery that front bonnet cover was changed - perhaps due to accident - or maybe just to take advantage of the benefits of the newer configuration underneath.

I think you'd be undertaking a massively complicated task to convert a longtail to a short tail. For starters, the rear wings are quite a bit wider starting at the base of the C-pillar and you'd literally have to cut them out of the rear of the chassis in order to fit narrower ones so they match up with the short tail's rear bumper. That's just for starters - plenty of other important differences exist under the skin. This sort of transformation would destroy the value of the car I believe. I don't think you'd receive support from McLaren or Lanzante on a project like that and you certainly shouldn't attempt something like that without their help. Certainly unthinkable.

Erik, I do not know what you mean by caption error, but it did notice that the indicators have the orange side on the outside, while it seems most cars have it on the inside. In the 90s, the position was quite random, and more recently I noticed at the 10-year anniversary gathering that all cars had it with orange inside and white outisde. Any idea about this?

Re: The McLaren F1 Owner's Club

It is not stated anywhere in the DOT lighting requirements that the side lights need to be outside of the indicators but it is generally accepted that it makes sense to have them as near the extremities as viable. Mind saying that there is similarly an argument for the indicators to be outboard as at the rear.
