Get an Edelbrock "Perfomer" intake (no, NOT "RPM"), a TINY 4-bbl (Holley 390 would be my choice, unless a '66 or '67 Pontiac OHC 6 "Q-Jet" can be found) and a Comp 240H ("High Energy" series, 192/200 @ .050" lift, .390" lift, 108 LSA) and this little engine will be "snappy" on the low-end and get as good mileage as it's capable of. We went through this
"exercise" a couple of years ago with a "Jimmy". 19 MPG from 14 with the 2.8.

TH700-R4 would also be a better choice. TH200-4R is a good trans,m but most aren't Chevy cases. Do you already have one? If not, the 700 should be a little less expensive, and will hold up fine behind the little V8.

I know this is an old thread - but I like your answer and have a 267. I don't want a speed freak, but would like to add a 4 bbl, some headers, etc. along with the Edelbrock intake. But what is the 'Comp 240H ("High Energy" series)' and where can I get these parts cheap?

Jegs or Summit are your best bets, also check with Comp Tech line for a recommendation for a suitable cam for your set up.

Re: Chevy 267

So, I just got myself an '81 El Camino, and given the valve covers stamped "350", along with the seller's listing, I thought I had a 350.
My mechanic just did a tune-up and good once-over, and told me I had a 267 in it.
I did a little searching around, and came across this really old thread. I plan on doing what is recommended in a few months. I got this car as a daily driver, and more of a work car than a showpiece. I need a little more pep and better performance. I think this thread has me covered.

Thanks!

Re: Chevy 267

My engine is done. I really just followed the instructions here, and had my mechanics do the work.

I put these into my little 267:
Edelbrock 2101 Performance manifold
Holley 0-8007 390 cfm 4 bbl carburetor
Summit 1100 low torque cam w/lifters
New valve covers (better fit)
New distributor (as long as the engine was apart)

This has made a big difference in this car. The engine has a little pep to it, and my mileage went up from 10 mpg to 18.5 mpg on the highway, and that's in the first 1000 miles.
I pay for it at idle, since the cam is a little aggressive, but I love how this runs on regular driving.

Re: Chevy 267

GWeimer, Thanks for the project update!
Glad to hear that folks like you are able to make use of info that was posted in "vintage" threads like this one.
And it sounds like you did a good job on your engine as well!
Congrats!
