1989 Tempo transmission problem
I have a 1989 Tempo with a 2.3L engine. Day before yesterday when we drove it, it shifted perfectly, no problems at all. Yesterday my husband was taking our daughter to the store and it would not go into high gear. It had reverse, 1st gear, 2nd gear, but when it went into 3rd, it was like it was in neutral. He tried shifting it manually, the same thing. Anyone have any ideas on what happened? Thanks in advance!

Re: 1989 Tempo transmission problem
Usually that is one of two things. One is a shift module, not too expensive. Two is the main shaft has lost teeth, very expensive. If the pan is dropped and it is full of metal chunks, it is the shaft. It can be a few dozen other things that are also on the not too expensive side. It needs a good transmission shop to find out which you have. It might be more expensive than the car is worth, so be prepared for that.
