1997 ford escort daily stalling

Recently purchased a 1997 ford escort zx2 and the car keeps stalling recently got it inspected everything passed with flying colors through the computer Car runs well; however when slowing down or coming to a stop locally (not on highway) car begins to stall and then shuts off. I changed spark plugs, filter new what else can I look for. Hope I did not wind up with a lemon. Please help driving me crazy as I use it for work everyday.

Is there a check engine light? One thing you could do is get a fuel pressure guage, mount it to the fuel rail, and tape it to the windshield. Drive the vehicle and when it acts up, monitor the pressure for a drop.

Thanks for the response. There is no check engine light. I have tried the above and the pressure definitely drops and the car turns off. Went with new regulator still nothing. However, I failed to mention before this occurs most of the time when the tank is full. As the tank lessens the vehicle does not turn on and off as much. Can it be the fuel pump. Anymore suggetions that can help I appreciate it. Can't find a mechanic (went through a few) and they can't explain it.

Thanks guy, I figured that but was I also afraid it would be that. Pretty penny to fix. Guess that's the only solution.

the car i recently bought was doing the same thing and the one day it did it and did not start back up..almost everything on the top end of the motor has been replaced and now it runs just runs really rough not really sure what else is wrong...if anyone knows how do tell if the timing is set right on a 1998 ford escort zx2 2.0Lplease let me know...thanks

Johnny its me again quick question, what do they mean when they right you need to purchase pump module with fuel pump. May be a silly question but can you fill me in.

could be a dirty or worn maf (mass air flow sensor) mine was doing the same thing when put a large open face intake, replaced the maf, and stopped doing it, but the car only died when there was a sudden drop in RPM's or when rolling to a stop

Johnny its me with the stalling 1998 ford escort - Unfortunately, don't bet your left nut anymore guy; I just changed the fuel pump to a new one and car is still stalling.

First of all, did you buy the fuel pump driver module with the pump? If not did you check your module? It gets a signal from the PCM about engine demands and controls voltage to the fuel pump. I believe it's by evap canister. The only other thing I can think of is your fuel pressure regulator is controlled by engine vacuum. The car stalls on decelleration or when the throttle is closed. There may be a problem with the IAC.

Also for Johnny, a bad or slow pumping fuel pump would definatly show problems at wide open throttle and not just at decelleration. When it's decelleration it's a control problem not the pump.

did anyone figure out what this was a ll about , i mean you said that it stalls and dies at stops and when slowing , hmmm mine does the same thing but is fine driving down the road. I also have an issue when forcing a lot of rpm's through the thing it has a battery light that comes on in the dash? I was told that it was the vaccum , i fixed that , I have been told its an alternator, but it test fine, i changed plugs, i changed the pcv valve and the vaccum that connect it to the intake, i had corrosion so i replaced the terminals ... guess what still has the battery light coming on when i try to push high rpm's, also it still dies at stops or when i slow down .... rpm's fall rapidly to nothing and it dies .. so could this possibly be a mas air flow , or an idle control modual ? I know the alternator is bad so ima change it but what about them ?

Before you spend any more money, check the signal coming out of the fuel shutoff/ inertia switch in your passenger side trunk. They are designed to trigger fuel shutoff in the event of a crash, ergo motion sensitive. Many have failed, many short out to the steel they are grounded to, or become hyper sensetive. Try bypassing the switch, drivin round, and see if you got a difference. Nothin more than a paperclip to test. I have a 98, pump, and believe driver just went out. But to all you out there, check your parts. adapter plugs for aftermarket fuel pumps for the zx2 (black and red wires, plug and blade clips) are sometimes wired backwards. Red is not positive and black is not negative. Look at the wires coming through the silver cap on the fuel pump. Positive is 2 black going into the silver cap, and negative is 2 black/white stripe. Theres only one wire for each set coming out the other side, but make sure they go to the right posts on the pump. Youll be suckin fuel right out the motor if you dont. And yes Im a mechanic

Hi, there not sure if anyone will notice my post here I have read other comments that people are or have had with the same problem i am having. Before i take it into a shop I wanted to search out what my problem could be, Basically same thing , staling, starts perfect even when it was minus 30 with out plugged in, always started, it was on occasion when i was driving and usually applied a bit of gas after have stopped or actually have stopped and then proceeding again.. .my car is 1997 ford Escort, it was my sons who passed away 4 years ago, i have been driving it, very good on gas, this problem just started this past winter, so i only drove it locally and not on the highway, i want to get it fixed because it is also sentimental and i need a car.if it is the idle bypass valve could someone let me know any suggestions what it could be or is , thanks so much everything else about the car is awesome, runs great, we have put a bit of work into it but just minor details, love how it starts up so easy in the winter , still winter here lol thanks so much
