Lightbulb Questions about making a 90 TSi AWD Talon a targa top?

I am interested in making my 90 Eagle Talon TSi AWD a targa top. I have only seen it done on 2 gens. I am just out for info on this topic. Tell me what you guys think. Is it a waste of time and money, or would it be well worth it. I know it is going to take away from the handling, but when you go straight down the track, handling only goes so far!:sun:

don't think it'll akse away handeling....mabey structural integrity, acceleration, and gas mpg...but not too much....i personally think it'll look good and will hold up aginst the elements and wind it done right.....the key here is if your going to do it...make sure it's done right....don't want water leaking in ur interior or have a lawsuit aginst u b/c it went flying off on the highway....should check out some crx's with that done......

i will be doing this to my car 91 crx, by a professional. you will definatly need to improve the structural stability of the car with a cage on the inside. the roof holds the car together, so if you remove then you will lose all that strength, and if you get into an accident, then your whole ride will accordian.

plan to spend around $5000 at least for a mod like this.

Well I don't think you HAVE to have a roll cage put inside....now I'm not saying cut out the top and just leave it like it is. Yes, you will still have to reinforce your roof. A roll cage is one way to do it, another would just to be reinforcing what is already there by either using thicker metal and just replace what is there, or add more to what is there. But that is if you are not planning on putting a roll cage in your car.

check out www.dsmtalk.com or www.dsmtuners.com for information about the targa top, DO NOT START A THREAD about it, use THE SEARCH. theres alot of work going into that and i would 100% tell u to have a proffessional shop that deals with projects like that on a basis. by creating the targa top, ur definitely going to need a roll bar, and other support bars, because ur frame will not be even remotely as close as it was. also it will be a pain to figure out how to handle it do to the door styling of our 1g's. unlike the 2g, the door competely surrounds the windows, so u'd have to figure out how to work that without any leaking, and making sure its a safe fit.

it WILL affect handling, the opening allows air to pass through causing more drag(or whatever you'd like to call it)

if you ever watch a japanese drift video(probably won't)you'll notice they all have their windows up because air passing into the car makes it easier to flip or even just make it lean more during turns, and you want to be flat through turns for the best possible handling

but if you use your car for drag only and not road course or drifting then I don't think it will cause you any problems

Re: Questions about making a 90 TSi AWD Talon a targa top?

I know this is a very old post, but just some insight for those still wanting to try this conversion. There has been some argument in this thread about handling stability. Even reinforcing the frame with frame connectors (under the car) and having a full roll cage, there is still too much flex in the body and it drastically effects the handling. I recently spent a lot of time and money doing this conversion to my 93 tsi and even with it being done professionally I had to completely scrap the body due to handling issues.
