'04 Cavalier oil/gas mixture in engine?
My daughter owns a 2004 Cavalier, and last week when we had a cold snap, her car would not turn over when she got off work. You can turn the key and it sounds like it starts to crank, but nothing catches. We thought it might have been because of the below zero temps, and tried to jump start it, to no avail. We had the car towed home. The tow driver said it sounded to him like the timing went out.
A friend told my hubby it sounded like the crankshaft sensor went bad, so we picked up a new one and was going to change it out this morning. However, when my hubby took the air breather hose off to get busy, a black mixture came pouring out. It looked like oil, but smelled like gas. In fact, he put some in bottle cap and touched a match to it, and it burned for several minutes until he put it out. I will say, about 4-5 months ago, my daughter figured her car was low on oil, and dumped 5 quarts of oil in, on top of the existing oil already in there. She started to drive home from work and immediately noticed white smoke coming from the exhaust. She pulled over, having only driven a couple of miles, and we had the car towed home. Hubby emptied out the whole thing and replaced all of the oil and the filter. The car has driven fine since then. I doubt that what happened several months ago has anything to do with this. However, we are at a loss as to what could cause the gas/oil mix in her air intake. I suggested perhaps someone deliberately dumped oil in her gas tank, but other than that, have no clue. Does this sound familiar to anyone, and if so, can it be fixed? We dropped the car off at a little shop that has done work for us before, and I am praying just a flush of the gas tank and fuel system will take care of it. I shudder to think that the engine is a total loss. Any info would be helpful. Thank you so much! |

The issue here is what is in the oil pan, if it is loaded with gas,may have dumped fuel from stuck injectors, by the way don't replace parts without a proper diagnosis

Re: '04 Cavalier oil/gas mixture in engine?
We didn't get a chance to remove the oil pan since we had to tow it to the garage today before my husband went to work, so it's sitting there now. But he's now thinking it may be a blown head gasket. The car had been driving fine, no overheating or unusual noises, it just simply would not start that evening. I'm hoping if it's a blown head gasket, that it has not warped the head. Since she had not noticed any steam coming off of the engine, and the temp gauge on the dashboard stayed normal, it's not likely there could be any warping, correct?
If it's NOT a blown HG, and it's stuck injectors, do you suppose replacing the injectors could fix it? And would this affect the fuel delivery system? I wouldn't want it to destroy the fuel pump. It seems weird that everything else has been going along ok, then this happens out of the blue. |

Getting way ahead here, get a report/diagnosis and post back.

Re: '04 Cavalier oil/gas mixture in engine?
I don't want to seem ungrateful, but wouldn't waiting for a report and posting back defeat the purpose of asking for opinions/help? I appreciate you taking the time to read and reply, but I am in need of advice, hopefully from someone who has dealt with this before, and can provide some insight just in case the mechanic is less than helpful.
I don't want to get ripped off, and though this guy has done good work for us before, it does not mean it can't happen, and if we are charged for something that doesn't work, then still have to get work done, I'm up the creek. Any thoughts on what it could be would help us tremendously. Thank you. |

Re: '04 Cavalier oil/gas mixture in engine?
This the Ecotec engine?
Are you saying the car doesn't crank over at all or it cranks over but doesn't start? Or does the engine sound like it is hydrolocked? |

Re: '04 Cavalier oil/gas mixture in engine?
Yes, it's an Ecotec 2.2. And it makes a sickly crank sound, but is not catching. I don't think it's hydrolocked, since it has not had any indication of any engine drag/cranking problems before that evening. She's been driving it every day, and said she didn't have any problems turning over the engine that morning. It just simply didn't catch and turn over after work and we thought it was because of the subzero temps. It wasn't until the following day when we took the air intake hose off of the manifold that we found the oil/gas mix in the hose. I'm assuming if it was there, the plugs are likely fouled.
I wish I had more info, but we didn't get a chance to get a good look inside because we decided to turn it over to the garage. |

Re: '04 Cavalier oil/gas mixture in engine?
Well, there is not much that we can do now, since the garage has it....hopefully, they are competent techs, and can quickly diagnosed the problem....
You do the basics......check for spark, fuel pressure, compression, codes, etc. |
