anybody replaced the driver's CV joint?
Hey
So in my previous posting about the chirp coming from the drivers side front wheel is still there. As I said, the hub seems fine and the other day when had the car in the air and wheels turning in drive the noise isn't there. I'm thinking it's the cv joint and have never replaced one before. Are they usually done in pairs or individually. If one's gone, likely the other side is too I'm thinking... Looking for thoughts or pointers...

Re: anybody replaced the driver's CV joint?
I replaced both of mine. Driver's side was easy; passenger side really tricky to get something against the diff to pop it out but eventually managed to do it.
I REALLY doubt chirping is a CV joint, though. If the boots are intact, it's probably fine. I'd lean much more towards brakes squealing against the rotors or possibly something rubbing the rotor shield. Question. If you press the brakes, does the noise go away? |

Re: anybody replaced the driver's CV joint?
Hi
I'm not "really" thinking it's the cv either but am still scratching my head. The noise doesn't go away when you apply brakes which leads me to believe it isn't brakes. If the rotor had a slight warp when the pads clamp onto the rotor you'd think the chirp would stop. As the pads are both worn evenly, both surfaces of the rotor just nicely polished from even wear... Anyway, I think on the weekend I'm going to take the caliper apart and lube the pins etc and see if that has any effect. I'd love to think it IS the caliper but as they're fairly new I'm not convinced as of yet....

Re: anybody replaced the driver's CV joint?
Could it be having the vehicle in the air, the wheel bearing does not have a load on it thus nor chirping, meaning a bad bearing?

I've removed and reinstalled them a couple of times in doing other work... but the originals are still with me at 341k miles. Normally, I would expect the shorter one to fail first ... if everything else is equal.
