In case anyone else still driving a 'dustbuster' wants to change their power locks operation; the system is programmable to one of four modes. To do this, doors must be closed, ignition is turned on, and hold the driver's power door lock button in 'lock' position for 10 seconds. The doors will lock, then unlock, indicating you have 10 seconds in which to program one of the four modes.
The modes are:
1) unlock drivers door only when shifting to 'PARK'. (press remote's 'unlock' button once to activate this mode.)
2) unlock all doors when shifting to 'PARK'. (press remote's 'unlock' button two times to activate this mode.)
3) all doors remain locked when shifting to 'PARK'. (press remote's 'lock' button once to activate this mode.)
4) disengage power door lock system. (press remote's 'lock' button two times to activate this mode.)
This info comes from my 1996 owner's manual, under the heading 'Customizing your automatic door locks'.
Come to think of it, since I'm the only one driving in my van most of the time these days, I think I'll go right now and change the setting so only the driver's door unlocks in PARK. That should save some wear and tear on the other doors. (I just had to replace the tailgate lock actuator @$50 since the plastic gear was stripped ).
