1993 Tbird power window problem

My driver side window works fine. The problem is with the right side. The control on the drivers door for the right window does nothing and the control on the passenger door works in up only. Took the window motor out and it goes clockwise (up) only. Shouldn't it turn both ways? Sould I start by replacing just one control or is both bad?

Re: 1993 Tbird power window problem

When you apply 12V to one of the motor terminals and a good ground to the other, the motor should turn in one direction. When you reverse these connections, the motor should turn in the opposite direction. Are you connecting the leads directly to the motor connector?
Before replacing the switches, try cleaning them with a sparay can of tuner cleaner that you can buy at your hardware store or Radio Shack. Disconnect the battery or the switch connectors and spray into the switches while working them back and forth. Do this several times. Tuner cleaner cleans the electrical contacts in many things such as your window switches and radio volume controls. Just be sure that power is disconnected from anything you spray with it.

Good tip! I've resurrected many window switches with electronic contact cleaner. You can also use it on connectors. I try to blow them out first, but you don't always have air.

Re: 1993 Tbird power window problem

I tried the spray as suggested and replaced both switches. Still doesn't go down.

Re: 1993 Tbird power window problem

Did you try reversing the power leads as I suggested to see if the motor turns in both directions?

Re: 1993 Tbird power window problem

When you put power to the window motor and hit the down button can hear hear the motor try to move or sort of whine? If so replace the little plastic ball bearings inside. Sometimes the broken pieces will get jammed up enough to where the window will move one direction and not the other.
