Peugeot 206 Rear wheel wobble **please help**
Hi,
This is my first time writting one of these so I will try and describe the problem as clearly as possible and hopefully someone will be kind enought to help. About a month ago (just after MOT) my car started making a banging noise when I drove over small bumps in the road and the car felt like it had a loose wheel . I checked all of the wheels for tyre pressure and tightened all the nuts to make sure but all was fine. The problem has progessively got worse and I noticed that the rear driverside wheel is wobbling really badly when I am driving. I tried shaking the wheel when the car is stationary and it is much looser than the other back wheel, I also checked the hub nut and it is tight. I have been told that I could need a new rear axle but this costs £350 just for the part. Could anyone shed some light on the problem or give me a possible cheaper remedy before I go spending all that money on an axle when a smaller part might fix the problem. Thanks in Advance Rachel |

Rachel,
Sorry to say it, but it sounds as though you have the same problem my 206 developed back in 2005. It's the rear sway beam bearings, and it was described to me as a legacy of the faulty design of the original 205, where it was well-known issue. What you've been quoted sounds a bit steep when the fix is probably to swap in a replacement from a wreck. (Mine lasted a further -- second -- 100,000 kms before I sold it without a problem). Exactly the same symptoms, though -- hit a bump in the road, and the rear wheel wobbles. Mine was detected by a trailing Pug driver who stopped me thinking the wheel nuts were loose, but my mechanic just happened to be in the vicinity, and diagnosed the problem straight away. |
