96 Geo Metro Engine
I just bought a Geo Metro on ebay for 2k with 76,000 miles on it and it stalled on the way home. I took it to the shop and they said the engine needs to be overhauled. I was surprised bc it only has 76,000 miles on it. I'm wondering of anywhere that has cheap used engines and if anyone could give me advice about putting it in. On top of that they never gave me an answer about how the rings went bad. They said it could be due to overheating but they don't know. Could you tell what exactly happened? If it did overheat, do you think there something wrong besides the engine? I really cant afford 2000 after just buying it for that price and I would hate to sell it. The car is located in Stony Ridge, OH.

There are very excellent guides posted here to do the engine rebuild or partial rebuild that you need. It's not very hard if you have a little automotive experience. It may not necessarily be the rings. You may have burnt exhaust valves. Please give us some more specs: engine size etc. Good luck!

It also may be a broken timing belt and the shop is just seizing the opportunity to hose you, $2,000 is way too much money for a rebuild even if it does need it.

well a broken timing belt will bend your valves or break them
it's an interference engine shared by toyota... if the belt breaks, the recommendation to rebuild the engine is correct maybe just change or rebuild the heads; it depends when you take it apart for inspection |

Woah, woah, woah! No Metro has an interference engine, and no Metro has any Toyota in it. Metros are Suzuki Swifts. The only Suzuki G engine that was interference was the 100 hp DOHC in the Swift GTi. You can mill two millimeters off a Metro head and it's still not an interference engine.

my bad, i knew some chevy models that shared their engines with toyota
i guess they're pulling your leg if they didn't show you the compression numbers, etc to warrant an engine rebuild; take it to a different shop ASAP! when you were driving it home, did you noticed the temp gauge or indicator light go on? if you blew the headgasket from overheating, they'll have to remove the heads, etc |
