I have a check engine light, that basically states the cam and crank position sensors do not match. I replaced the crank sensor and the distributor and I still have the same code all the time. it used to go away if I would manually adjust the timing one tooth off but now just stays on constantly. Please help.

What is the code no.?
The timing is not adjustable.
You can crank the dist all day and not change timing.
Timing is set by crank sensor.

Base dist setting is like this.

After base setting you will need a engine capable scanner to set the camshaft retard setting.

It needs to be set as close to 0 degrees neg. or pos. as you can get it.

Re: 2001 chevy 1500

Hi Tom,
I had this code (1345) right after I changed my intake manifold gasket as I did not insert the distributor in the exact position as it was when I removed it. Rotor was pointing correctly, but the distributor base can rotate relative to the hold-down bracket (my 4.3 vortec is locked and can't be rotated) and it must be within I believe +/- 2 degrees. I tried the blind "loosen-rotate-recheck" for a while but to no avail. I paid the money to my friend's garage to hook it to the scan tool and set the timing.
