99 Rodeo wont start

99 Rodeo 3.2

Can a dirty EGR cause a no start condition?

If it was stuck wide open, maybe. Not likely though. Check for fuel pressure, listen for the fuel pump when you turn on the key.

Re: 99 Rodeo wont start

Thanks for the reply.

Truck has been to the Wrench twice now for no start condition. He has replaced the Cam Sensor already. Said his diagnostic indicated that repair.

Truck started...ran great...then rpms would drop to zero for a split second...then run great. No set pattern to that event that I could tell...but it did it several times over 45 min of driving. Got home..parked it....next day it would start...surge...then die. This happened 4 or 5 times.

Next day...back to no start.

Fuel Pump sounds like its running.

Any ideas?

Check fuel pressure anyway. A fuel pump can still sound like it's running when it's not really doing it's job.

Re: 99 Rodeo wont start

**UPDATE**

Went out this morning and it started like new. Ran as strong and as smooth as when new. Drove around for an hour..waiting for it to do its thing....nothing. It ran perfect. I had disconnected the batter over the weekend...so even the Check Engine light had cleared.

Stopped to fill up. On restart..got Check Engine. Drove to AutoZone...the only code was P0342 Bank 1 Cam Position Sensor Low Input Voltage.

Took it back the The Wrench who did the work before....His Snap On Scan Tool confirmed the code from AutoZone. He said as long as it was running, he didnt want to mess with it. He gave me his cell phone to call if it has issues again.

My instinct is since this appears to be some kind of intermittent thing...that I should just bite the bullet and have it replaced.

Any thoughts?

Oh good gawd. Why didn't your mechanic check the freeze frame data? This would have clued him in on what was going wrong. Sounds like your mechanic is either lazy or not up to speed on modern vehicle electronics. If he replaced the cam sensor already the one he put in is either defective or there is a problem somewhere else. Either with wiring or on the cam itself with the sensor wheel it picks up the signal with.

Pretty sure there is only one. Everything I read about this code, though, says it doesn't point to the sensor itself. Your mechanic really needs to analyze the freeze frame data to figure out what's happening.
