d16a1 head compatiblity question.
I was wondering. lets say i did a d16a1 swap into a 87 civic hatch. Since the dohc zc and the a1 are almost identical would the zc head fit the a1 block. would there be an advantage to this besides the intake manifold. or if i just swapped the cams to an aftermarket cam, would it be pointless to do?
pretty much im just wondering if the zc and a1 blocks are the same block just with different mounts? and other than that what are any other differences between the 88 a1 the 90a1 and the zc? Last edited by furyskater16; 02-28-2008 at 04:45 PM. |

Re: d16a1 head conversion
The only reason the ZC puts out a little more HP over the D16A1 is because of the cams. If you are going to swap the cams anyway, swapping the head will be pointless.
Differences between the 88-89 D16A1/Integra ZC and 88+ Civic ZC: 1) Motor mount location 2) D16A1 cams are smaller than Integra ZC or Civic ZC 3) Civic ZC uses 17 tooth crank gear and 34 tooth cam gears, while the D16A1 and Integra ZC's use a 20 tooth crank gear and a 40 tooth cam gears 4) Civic ZC uses a slightly larger intake manifold 5) Civic ZC uses a different valve cover bolt placement, valve cover, timing belt and timing belt cover That's it, everything else is identical and interchangeable. I should also mention that the 86-87 D16A1 and browntop ZC use a vacuum advance distributor, a different oil pump, lower compression due to flat top pistons, and have a 22mm crank snout instead of the 88+ 24mm crank snout. |
