2003 Shift Lock Release? Replace Battery?

Hello, my girlfriends 2003 Envoy would not start the other day I figured the battery was dead.

It was in a garage with lots of things, and I wanted to replace the battery but I lack knowledge on how to and there was about an inch between the wall and the front of the truck.

I looked in the manual on how to release the shift lock if the battery is dead, it said to lift the boot up on the shifter and there would be an orange switch. There was no such switch. It would be nice to find a way to move the vehicle without boosting it for 2 seconds each time to switch gears (the truck will still not start when boosted, it will just try to start- this is the battery for sure right?).

Also, I tried to charge the battery for 6 hrs and it charged at 2amps for the whole time the battery did not hold the charge. To replace the battery I just remove the large plastic piece bolted on the front under the hood correct?

I would really really appriciate any help...

Re: 2003 Shift Lock Release? Replace Battery?

Welcome to AF, if not modified when recalled, the device under the boot is a lever ( small) not a switch. I would try cleaning and tightening the terminals first, 8mm or 5/16 socket. Sometimes you must leave the boosters on for 5 minutes before attempting top start. Battery and attaching hardware are straightforward.

Re: 2003 Shift Lock Release? Replace Battery?

I don't claim to have a cure-all for the described prob, but it's a fact that SOME of the OEM batteries (if that's what's still there) with the side posts were defective and leaked out enough acid to 1) ruin cable ends and 2) refuse to take a charge via boosting. I'd verify battery post integrity and good hot & negative contact first off the bat. Use a flashlight to look for acid corrosion in/around the battery tray. If any corrosion is observed, determine which battery post it's coming from, disconnect at least that cable end and inspect carefully. It may be shot. I'd wager the veh needs a new battery, but these checks will need to be done anyway. Good luck & Merry Christmas!
