Exclamation mr2 1986 overheating

Hello i have a problem with my new old car, i bougth a mr2 1986 recently, and have a problem with the temp, initial the rear fan doesn't run, ok, i make a direct conection and now run good, but when i drive over 1 hour the temp raise to high, so the first step now drive with the hood open (it's rear engine) and then extend the time, but when i drive over 2 hours the temp raise to over again, so i need stop, open the engine hood and the open and with the car running the temp low slowly and when acel the engine to 3,000 rpm on parking the temp low fastly, maybe for the pump water but slowly increase again, and continue down again, near to half meter, do you have some idea? the engine run good, i drive near to 110 miles and its good, how can i solve the problem??

thx a lot

Re: mr2 1986 overheating

You have one of two things:

(1) air trapped in the coolant system. It gets trapped around the thermostat and then the thermostat doesn't open/close properly due to hot steam instead of hot water. To fix this there is an air-bleed fitting that goes from the thermostat housing to the coolant overflow bottle and you need to open this and bleed out the air. If this fitting is bad (cracked or bad o-ring) they are cheap to replace from the dealer.

(2) if this problem re-occurs after bleeding the air and you have to keep doing this, you most likely have a bad head gasket. To fix this replace the head gasket. Note it won't necessarily show up as coolant in the oil, the problem is a head gasket crack directly from the cylinder to the coolant jacket and combustion air is forced into the cooing system. Hence the trapped air keeps coming back.

that would be #2. change the head gasket, it should fix your problem.
