Hello. I have a 98 Mitsu Galant ES and I switched it to synthetic around 106k but the previous owner said it burned oil. I really dont believe its a oil burning problem. I think its a leak from around the oil gasket area(where the oil pan bolts to engine block). It dont leak when it sits still, but when i look at the area it is really black and I tried tightening the bolts for the oil pan and they are pretty tight except for one was stripped(threads). It is barely even sitting there in the hole. So this is what I think the problem is. Is there a way I can fix this besides getting a new gasket and taking the pan off? Like maybe putting it up on a rack and cleaning it really good and JB welding the pan to the block? Thats just an idea. What do you guys think?

uh, don't glue the pan to the block. That would be a bad idea.

First thing you need to do is verify where its actually leaking from. I would pressure wash the engine (carefully) and then drive it 5 miles and look for new residue. With the number of miles, I would suspect the rear main seal first, but really it could be coming from everywhere

No, Don't weld it. Bad Idea. As far as the bolt, try getting another bolt to replace it. if necessary it could require a thread retap but that's better than the teflon bolt or JB welding idea. That should solve that problem

If you aren't sure where the leak is coming from just clean everything up real nice and do a few laps around the block and check for leaks and go from there.

Does it have any blue smoke? I believe it's a mitsubishi trademark.

Especially if its a 4 cylinder Gallant.

I believe there was a recall done in the mid 90s though, apparently they engineered the head wrong, and the valves guides actually worked.

Mitsu/chrysler had crazy problems with rings on almost all of their engines, most of them partially solved by 98, but they're not what I call durable rings.

No blue smoke lol. There really isnt any color smoke coming out of the exhaust. It just for some reason loses oil. Yeah I am starting to learn that mistubishis engines are not even comparable to the other japanese engines. They also like to tick a lot with there lifters going bad. Really gay.

These engines start to leak oil when they get to around 60.00o m
they valve cover gaskets get hard and leak Rear crank seal also
timing belt should be changed around this time as the cam and
crankshaft seal also leak like crazy .
