Will a speeding ticket prevent me from getting a job in a dealership?

Last month I received my first and only traffic violation... I was driving 47 mph in a 25 mph school zone. Sadly enough I was in the slow lane and cars were passing me in the left lane but the unmarked Indiana state cop radared me. I know I did wrong but I just moved to Indianapolis to attend Lincoln Technical Institute for automotive and service management. Now since this ticket was a school zone one it will be on my permanent record. I am worried it will effect my chances of getting a job in a dealership terribly becuase I either want to be a technician or service advisor. However I do plan on taking a driver course to get the points taken off my license and I am keeping a 4.0 GPA and perfect attendance and taking ASE tests to better myself for when I graduate and go to get a job. Sorry for the long lecture of this but any thoughts from someone who works at a dealership would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Will a speeding ticket prevent me from getting a job in a dealership?

Um, potentially is the best I can tell you. It really depends on the dealership and what their specific rules on the situation are. If you haven't had any accidents, it is possibly they may over look a speeding ticket. Also, if the points are removed via traffic school they may not care. Also, I know with my dealership, they only ran in-state records. I had just moved from NY to PA, and a seatbelt ticket I had gotten didn't even show up on their search. Also your new state maynot transfer over points from your old state. So there are alot of things to go by.

I'd talk to somebody at whatever dealership you are planning to work for, and find out how they check your drivers record. My dealership couldn't even check NY licenses when I first started working for them, so they hired me on my word that it was clean (I choose not to mention the seatbelt ticket, and hope for hte best).

Also I know some guys that worked at our dealership had speeding tickets and accidents during their employment, and probably prior...I wouldn't stress over it too much. If it comes up, explain the situation honestly, say that you are sorry and promise it wont happen again. And if you are a decent enough prospect they will probably overlook it entirely. Just make sure you don't get any more Good luck

Also, I'm moving this to dealership experiences, because this section is more reserved for advice about traffic violations. So in the dealership section, you may get more of the responses you were looking for.

Depending on your age and the dealers insurance, this may have a bearing on your possible employment.
Many dealer will not allow you to drive (even on their property) customers or company vehicles until you reach 21.
If you are a technician, you will be driving customers vehicles..you will need a clean license.

You need to show up for court and try to get the ticket/fine/points reduced. Usually the court will reduce the ticket if you show up. You can also check to see if they will allow traffic school and the ticket not be posted to your record. It is unlikely one ticket will have much effect on your employment. I would be worried more about the insurance hike.

Re: Will a speeding ticket prevent me from getting a job in a dealership?

Thanks for the info guys. As I stated earlier the ticket is on my permanent record becuase of it being a school zone speeding ticket and I did pay it the following day. However I recently emailed some lady at the traffic violations office and she told me once I paid the ticket the case was closed but she also said I could write the judge and ask him to reopen it to be discussed (which I am doing soon). Hopefully the judge is a nice guy..... and I also plan on taking the driving program to get my points taken off (which should make it look better especially since I decided to pay the money and take the time to do it). As for the insurance hike I am not worried becuase my insurance will not raise over one ticket. Wish me luck!
