.....95 Windstar STARTER problems.....
I have a 95 windstar LX and I'm starting to have a problem with starting it. A year ago, I had this problem once, but after a few moments of locking and unlocking the steering column, it just started up. Never had this problem since, until a week ago. At first, it just happened, and after turning the steering wheel a certain way, it would just suddenly start. Now it's becoming more and more frequent. Yesterday I had to sit in a parking area for about 45 minutes trying to turn on my van, and all of a sudden after messing with the steering column for a very long time, it decided to turn on!!! This is after calling AAA for some assistance. I still have no clue as to what is causing this to my van or why??? If anyone has some insight or have had a similiar problem, please let me know what I can do to fix this. It has been a great family van....any help would be greatly appreciated. I need this van for my work, and don't want to be stranded on the road....

im assuming you have a tilt wheel. the ignition switch is mounted on the column and may be adjustable. a shaft runs from the lock cyl to the switch. the shaft may not be pushing the switch completely without playing with the column.

Ditto to above ... plus:
If you've never replaced the ignition switch (the black box down on the lower end of the column), it may be in its last days. Twisting the column may help burned contacts in the switch make contact. If this is the case, you're on borried time until you make that replacement. |

Re: .....95 Windstar STARTER problems.....
Its rather straight forward. You can start removing the steering column lower trim covers (the ones at your knees) and you will soon see the black box. I say this cautiously because I'm assuming your '95 is not that different from my '99.
You may have to remove the key tumbler to get started. On my model, you lift a battery cable, put the key in "on" position and push upward thru a little hole on bottom of key area. Then just pull key and tumbler straight out. Be sure to lubricate everything real good before reassembly. |

try placing the gear shift in neutral, and try to start it. If it starts, check or replace neutral safety switch.
