is there really a range for the insight?
i just read somewhere that there is ~690 mile range for the insight, what does that mean? the car is charged (i believe) when the brakes are used or when the car slows down, which should eliminate the range. the only thing i can think of is they mean that you can drive around 690 miles without slowing down before you would need to slow down and therefore charge the system? that would be a long drive and i don't think it would effect many people, but i'm not sure, if anybody can help me out or verify this information let me know. thanks

Hey Thomas did you forget this thing runs on gas?
What you read is probably refering to the 2000 model which Honda claimed would get up to 70 mpg. With a ten gallon gas tank that will get you close to the 690 range in theory. But I have a 2000 model and I get 52.4 mpg. So I doubt I will ever see 690 miles on a tank of gas. The batteries that charge when you coast, brake, etc.. are for the 15 horsepower electrical assist. It is kinda like an electrical turbo. The 3 cylinder gas motor is the true engine of the car. |

I'm sure that they're talking about the range of a single tank of gas. The life time average on my insight is showing 63.5 mpg. But, it varies a lot depending mostly on the weather. During the winter my mpg drops to the low 50's, but in the summer I can occasionally do better than 70. Of course, air conditioning drags it down horribly, too. Oddly enough, I lost my gas cap once and the fuel economy went straight to hell.

Re: is there really a range for the insight?
thats because the gas cap keeps pressure on the system and also gas could evaporate thru the fill nozzle then....
