(Ten years Later)and the speedo wont work!!
IM a happy camper- the 944 now runs -after sitting for TEN YEARS...and (it wheezes like a cat) -[either the IAC valve or a Injector cleaning will fix that ]-can anyone here assist with a speedometer that simply dont work? The helpful and amazingly insightful Haynes manual is completely full of $#(^. They refer to replacing the sensor located on the left side of the transmission - Theres nothing there- Having just repaired the fuel tank I got a *real* good look at the transmission - after pulling it and putting it back - and I see not even wires - just the back-up light connector. --(Early 85 944 NA) Being the only 944 Ive seen on the road round here, the Police are lookin hard whenever I go by, and I have no idea how fast Im going...!

Re: (Ten years Later)and the speedo wont work!!
The speedo sensor was for the later models. Ours are cable driven off the left front wheel.
If you're lucky your cable snapped, not likely but cheaper than replacing the speedo. Gettin to the speedo is fun! Here's my way of doing it. 1) reach from under the dash and pop out the left gauge cluster (just a compression fit). unplug it, hug it, put it in the passenger seat 2) Use the hole to loosen and pull slightly on the speedo. Remove the cable connector. 3) remove the speedo carefully. There is a circuit board with three wires screwed on the back of the gauge with a short set of leads going to the DME. IIRC just unscrew the board. 4) remove lights and etc. no need to mark as they are all for illumination and ground. Wiggle gauge out. Installation is the reverse of removal. As a side note, replace the bulbs while you're at it. It should only cost about $5 for the bulbs and will save headache of having to tear it out again just so you can see. To test the speedo. Find a nail with 4 point tip, break the head off, stick it in your drill. Carefully insert tip into the speedo cable head. Running drill slowly, you should see your speedo working. If so, cable may be broken, or not connected at one of the ends. If not, time for a rebuild(t). hope it helps

3 things: 1) the 944 isn't the best camping vehicle 2) cats purr and cough up hair balls but rarely wheeze 3) congratulations

Re: (Ten years Later)and the speedo wont work!!
Oh my god this thread makes me happy! I have been looking for a speed sensor to replace my supposedly broken one. That damn manual told me the same thing and I thought I was crazy when I didn't see anything!
