I think it would be cool if it makes it into production.

It was reported a few weeks ago that the Bengal is going into production. It's a four-seater with the top up and a two-seater with the top down. It has a rear side door to provide access to the rear seat...for golf bags.
It's front-wheel drive and is powered by a V6 engine. The transmission is mounted in the front of the car as opposed to between the engine and the firewall as in most FWD cars. This setup allows for a longer wheelbase. Having seen it at a few car shows, I don't see what all the excitement is about. It's not all that pretty. It's not all that interesting from the engineering side. Other companies make better convertibles and, probably, sell them for less than what Buick will sell this one. |

I just hope the production version doesn't get botched. I think it will be successful, but not for enthusaists. I like it.

It's actually a part of a set of three.
Pontiac Solstice > Buick Bengal > Saturn Skye. The Saturn I saw in person was ugly, Didn't see the bengal and the pontiac is a very sweet roadster. There's talk it MAY go into production.... we'll see... I ~think~ they will all be based on a aluminum 2.2L Ecotech, and the pontiac will get a supercharger (ala saab's turbo charged "ecotecs) I have a few pics of the pontiac if interested... |

As concepts, the Sky, Bengal, and Solstice were not related. I believe the Sky and the Solstice both used Ecotech engines, but the Solstice was RWD and the Sky was FWD. The Bengal, too, was FWD and used a unique drivetrain setup where the transaxle was in front of the engine as opposed to the tradition of placing the transaxle behind the transversely mounted engine.
At one point, the Sky, Bengal, and Solstice were all headed toward production but all riding on a version of the Solstice's "tubular" platform. In the past year, the Sky and Bengal have been axed. The Solstice, however, is still due to enter production in about three years. Pontiac's version of the Ecotec will be more akin to the Saturn ION Red Line's supercharged engine than the Saab 9-3's turbo engine. |
