Transmission pan removal help please

I know this sounds elementary, but I have a 2002 Yukon Denali with 6.0 AWD and thought I would change trans filter & fluid. Anyway this one has a drain plug in the pan. I thought great, this will cut down on the mess. My question is; is this drain plug reverse threaded or what is the deal with it being so tight. I rounded it off with a 6 point metric socket and looks like visegrips are next. Also the shifter cable seems to be over hanging the pan on one side. Will the pan drop and clear this or does the cable or both cable and bracket have to come off? Thanks for any help.

GM put locktite on the threads for that bolt. I ended up sucking the fluid out of the fill tube using a special tool.

To remove the pan, I had to remove the 2 torix bolts holding the shifter cable bracket to get clearance. On my 2000 Yukon, I even had to drop the front driveshaft to get the pan off.

My understand is the drain plug needs to be heated up with a torch to get it hot and then it can be removed.

Since I have the tool to pull the fluid out of the fill tube, I have not tried to remove the drain plug. One of these days, I need to do that.

Thanks; I'm in this project now, what a PITA!! I never did get the drain plug out. I did find out about that bracket, what a SOB to have to remove those torix screws. The pan had one of those paper type material gaskets on it and my filter came with the same POS gasket. I'm thinking about just re-using the same one being its already stuck to the pan. Will using the same one be something I regret due to excessive leaking?? Otherwise I'll have to make a trip to the dealer in the morning to buy the reusable rubber type. I sure would like to see the proper tool to easily remove the torix screws. I think this is one that is worth taking to the shop and paying to have it done.

I would use a new gasket. I usually go to a local transmission parts supplier to get tranny parts. Not sure if the dealer sells the reusable gasket or not. Might want to see what a local auto parts store has as well. Some should sell just the gasket and hopefully a good quality one.

Remember, no gasket sealer for this gasket (you probably knew that but just wanted to be sure).

Thanks again, I had to get this back together for a trip my wife will leave for around noon. I have to work too and just did not feel I could take off to do this. I'll drive it and check for leaks. I guess if I had to do it again, it would not be too bad. I just never had to go through so much trouble just to remove a trans pan. Now my car and Jeep look easy. Anyone know the pan bolt torque? 13 ft-lbs is the torque specs for the pan bolts.

i know this in an old post but anyway, i had no issue removing the drain plug and not reverse thread
