93 Lumina 3.1 TCC replacement
After reading many of the threads and doing the tests recommended by many, it is clear that my TCC Selenoid has gone bad. Is there a simple way to replace the faulty one? I've read that it requires dropping the engine slightly to get to it, but I don't think I have the tools necessary to hold up the engine while I do that. Is there any other way? thanks...

With the TCC unplugged, the car stays in 3rd gear. I have to manually shift from second into 3rd. It will not go into 1st with it unplugged. Is this similar to what you are experiencing?

Re: 93 Lumina 3.1 TCC replacement
Before I unplugged my TCC it would surge when I tried to take off but after taking off and having it die couple times it would run fine until i slow down and stop and try to take off again, after I unplugged it, it never did it again and I have never had a problem with it shifting or anything

Re: 93 Lumina 3.1 TCC replacement
A 91 Lumina could have a 4L60 trans, which has a vacuum modulator and a 4 wire TCC switch. On those models, you can just unplug it and all you'll lose is lock-up. On the 93 Lumina, it has the 4L60E electronic transaxle (optional on the 91 also) with the 6 wire TCC plug. Since this plug also controls the shift solenoids, you cannot just unplug it or the car will go into limp home mode which is 3rd gear.

Re: 93 Lumina 3.1 TCC replacement
Thanks for that information. I do have that 6-wire and that's exactly what happens. I feel like I'm driving my grandpas old '53 Dodge pickup with the H-shift on the fly.
I guess I better get this car up on the blocks. The fuse for the TCC also controls the primary cooling fan, so I am not getting out of this one easily. I suspect that the gasket that keeps fluid off these 2 selenoids has gone out and fluid is getting in there and shorting them out. Is this a Saturday afternoon job that I won't loose my religion over, or should I bring this into the shop and let them do it. I just replaced my Ignition Control Module , so compared to that, what? Thanks again. |
