2004 Trailblazer - DTC P0016

I have a SES light on and when I scanned the code it came up with P0016 - Cam Position Sensor. The vehicle is running fine with no rough idle or misfires. Could this just be a sensor problem or do I need to look further?

More than likely your cam phaser actuator solenoid or the CPS itself has an issue. Both are on the radiator end of the cylinder head, towards the air cleaner side. The CPS sticks out the front, while the CPAS is the can shaped solenoid out the side. Check the connections & check the CPAS for oil leakage.

Thanks for your response. I checked out both the CPS and the CPAS, there was no obvious damage or oil on the connectors. However, I did notice can shaped body of the CPAS rotates inside the mounting flange that attaches to the engine. Do you know if these components are expensive and even if their available at a autopart store or do you have to go to a dealer? It might just be easier to replace and see if that clears up the code. Thanks again for your help.

I wouldn't just start replacing parts here without a full scan/diagnosis, the cam actuator solenoid turns, this is ok. This is an error the pcm percieves as it moves the cam position and checks the cps and cam sensor inputs to check for their relationship. It is possible the cam does not actuate here also, hence the full diagnosis recommendation.
