Wierd Transmission Problem

Any wisdom available on this? 93 AS AWD works fine, except that in first or reverse, it's like driving with the emergency brake on. And no, the emergency brake is not on.

Re: Wierd Transmission Problem

I'm not sure if you are still having these problems .... but we had a similar problem with our 1993. We thought it was also our transmission. We even had it confirmed when we took it into the rinky-dinky shop down the street. We were all set to junk it when my husband had a thought....

Check the rear yolk. Sure enough it was low. It took almost a whole thing of gear dope! Never had the problem again! We just included this in our regular checks of fluid levels.

Hope this helps. It sure was better than having to buy a new transmission or new vehicle. It only costs a couple dollars!!!!!!!!!

Good Luck!

Just had something similar, but intermittent and affecting reverse only on my '97 XLT. Fine in FWD gears, but would occasionally bog to the point of stalling when dropped into reverse. Turned out it was a bad neutral safety switch (aka selector position switch). $42. If your driveline lubrication checks out okay, double-check to make sure that switch is working.

Re: Wierd Transmission Problem

Perhaps I am too late.... and I'm sorry if so .... But I will leave this intormation out there in case someone else needs it as well....

The yoke is very hard to get off. It is actually made to come off with a 3/8" rachet. (That's without any socket, of course). But be careful.... It could easily strip. If this happens, I'd suggest using an allen wrench, large enough that you could pound in. This way you can have a tight fit to get it off.

Otherwise, you'll have to take it into a shop to have them get it.

Good luck with that!
