93 Sunbird 2litre electrical/running problems
1. Car gradually lost charge (I thought) one evening last week at night. The lights dimmed & the radio started cutting in & out. This lasted 'till I turned into driveway (lucky) and when the revs went to idle, the engine quit. No charge to restart. Battery re-charged overnight enough to start car which idles OK until it warmed up & then the electrics went haywire again.
2. Figured alternator bad, so rebuilt it & re-installed. Started OK, idled 'till warmed up & electrics went goofy again & car stalled. 3. No check engine light & no codes. My thoughts: If coil pack, why should it fire up & run cold? If TPS, why idle OK when cold? Same for CPS. If bad ground, why start in 1st place? If MAP or MAF sensor, why knock out electrics on rough idle? And finally, if ECM, it might be starting from pre-programmed "best values" & then when reading sensors adjust wrong, but why screw up electrics? & what other sensor am I missing? I've never heard of wires opening on heat-up so I've done no continuity testing & a bad ground will be bad regardless of the engine temp one would think. What am I missing? Any help appreciated. Thanx, Ralph |
