Re: Alt Gauge goes to Top. Now Battery Dead.
The battery wouldn't accept a boost after 20 minutes of trying...it's THAT dead! I was concerned about putting too much strain on the boost car. I'll pick up a loaner battery and give it a go. What would cause the gauge to spike?

Re: Alt Gauge goes to Top. Now Battery Dead.
Put a new battery in it tonight. Started up, and the alt gauge spiked again. Shut it off, restarted it, and the gauge dropped to normal. Took it around the block, and all seems fine. I'll know in the morning if all is well, and the battery isn't drained. I'll post an update.
Thanks for the replies!! Interesting how easily skin rips open in this cold. ![]() |

Re: Alt Gauge goes to Top. Now Battery Dead.
Find a real voltmeter..a 20$ digital multimeter from the store or neighbour will do..and measure voltage with car at rest, then start and read. Should be near 14.5 sTAYING AT 12v or less means the car will run until battery has emptied.
Spiking as you describe leads me to think your alternator regulator or diode bridge is faulty...a common problem...either can be changed within the alternator...needs some skills at soldering...or swap the whole alternator once proven dead. I would have agreed on a fried battery until you said the gauge spiked with the bew battery....it should have not.

Re: Alt Gauge goes to Top. Now Battery Dead.
LMP, bang on. We had it tested, and alternator is fried. It's only a few years old, but it's a rebuilt unit. We're off to the repair shop to pick it up.
Thanks again!! ![]() |
