Yes, it needs extended cranking time.

Yes, a lot. You can usually get the car to start again if you give it enough gas while cranking.

Oh, the car just stalls suddenly, no matter what you are doing. It just shuts off, sometimes while driving. Very scary.
I thought from your question #2 above that you might know exactly what is happening. I find it odd that my stalling situation is overcome by providing lots of gas--and I'm hoping you can tell me what is happening!
