97 pasat window regulator

finally bit the bullet and bought a new regulator from the local dealership [$155.00] and upon removal of the old one found several stripped teeth near the top of it,s travel.. from reading various posts i find that this is fairly common . .it almost seems that the system is under undo pressure at this point . is there a reason for this to happen or just poor design. my style of regulator is the type with the 2 arms. . is there an adjustment to be done when installing and also what controls the amount of window travel i.e. up and down micro switch perhaps sam

i do have one further query. at the point where the motor and regulator gear and teeth meet up ther is a circular plate that bolts on to the regulator that has an eccentric and a rubber plate and i have no ides what it does or if it requires adjustment sam
