I was wondering, on average, how many miles do you get out of a Ranger before you start having major problems assuming you always kept up with the fluids, etc.
thanks

I'm on my third now, and I let the first two go at about 150,000 miles. I wasn't running into major problems, just an increasing number of annoying small problems. I suppose a lot depends on your willingness and ability to take care of minor issues as they come up. I'm not set up to do a lot of mechanical work (I live in an apartment)so even relatively minor mechanical problems can be a major hassle and expense. A couple of mechanics have told me 200k is a typical lifespan for a Ranger.

I have 253,000 on mine original motor until 237,256 when a family member wrecked their bronco 2 and gave me a low mile engine and I destroyed my tranny mud bogging right around the same time and rebuilt it so it would have been fine not the trucks fault.
Oh yeah its an 89 2.9L 5 speed 4X4

I've had one that died at 94K, one with cracked head and warped head. $4K later and a new engine, I got in a wreck that totalled it.

I used to have a 95 ford ranger, with the 2.3litre, and 5 speed transmission. Changed the clutch in it twice and replaced the alternator 3 times, and the radiator once, and the belts and hoses about 15 times. I know, I know that sounds like a lot of belts and hoses, and clutches for a ford ranger right? Wrong, before mine was sold to make room for a new toy, my ranger had 852K on it and it never used a drop of oil and the transmission never gave me any problems. Just treated it good and changed the fluids regularly. And yes it was the original engine and trans, i bought the truck new.

I've never had a ranger myself, but I've know people who have. They're pretty strong for the most part.
I had a friend in high school with a '97 4 cyl 5speed that he beat the shit out of up to about 300,000. I have another friend who had one for a long while with a 4.0 and a 5 speed and it refused to die until 425,000.
The only problem I've seen on a ranger was on a 2002 4.0 auto owned by this guy I knew. It was around 180,000 and the rear differential started howling quite badly, and eventually exploded... literally. One of the gears punched a hole in the casing, gear oil bleeding everywhere, and the remaining gears were stripped and/or missing teeth. Mind you, this guy is an idiot who doesn't take care of his vehicles, so none of them last very long in his hands.
I guess the lesson here is if you take care of your ranger, it will take care of you.
