99 cvpi has power but wont start

It happened right on new years, the car started up right away, but when I hit my first traffic light thats when I started to have trouble. When the light turned green and i started to go and the car was going really slow. So I found my nearst side road and pulled over and turned the car off and tried to start it again but it wouldnt start. It had power but it wouldnt turn over.

So the engine does not even crank when you try to start it? Are there any clicks from the starter/solenoid? Do the lights dim when you try to start it? It might be as simple as changing the battery.

It has power and sounds like it wants to start. The dash lights dim a little when I turn the key. I dont know if it is the fuel pump, fuel filter. thanks for the reply

Since the engine is cranking, does it sound like it is at a normal speed when compared to a normal start? Or does it sound weak like the battery needs replacement?

Next step is to check for fuel and spark. Turn the ignition key ON and listen for the fuel pump to kick on momentarily from the rear of the car. It is a buzzing noise. If you do no hear it the fuel pump may be dead or the fuse blown or the wiring problematic. When was the last time you replaced the fuel filter?

I havent replaced the fuel filter nor the pump since i have owned it, which was early 2009. But I will check if I can hear the pump kick in. Im thinking it has to be fuel related because of the milage it has 198,000. thanks

If you hear the fuel pump running, replace the fuel filter. It costs about $15 at an auto parts store and you only need a flathead screwdriver to get it out. If you can, get a filter that comes with the plastic retaining clips. I use Wix which comes with the clips.

I checked for the noie of the fuel pump and I didnt hear anything.

Fuel pump relay could also be a problem. Try switching the relays. Use the AC relay, since you won't need it for winter.

Your fuel pump is shot. Not hard to fix and you don't have to drop the tank. If you have more than a half a tank, you will need to drain the tank below the pump housing, and you don't have to unhook the fuel lines. After you take the retaining ring off the pump, all you have to do is wiggle the pump out.
