dead battery.. help

2002 Chevy Avalanche. I put a new battery in it and without driving for 2 days since putting in the battery, battery died.. What could be drawing the charge? The radio/clock has been giving me problems before. It would turn on and off by itself and not able to control the radio at all. Could this be a problem and should I take out the radio fuse?

Same thing happened to me and the guys on here pointed me to the transformer/powersupply plugged into the cigarette lighter. It had a short in it and was drawing excessive current causing the battery to go dead. Unplug any aftermarket items first and go from there.

Charge up the battery, and install it, but leave the negative terminal disconnected.

Get a 12-volt test light, and connect one end to the neg. terminal and the other to the neg. battery cable. Now, with all doors closed and all lights off, no key in ignition, the test light should not light up. If it does, you have a short. Try removing all fuses and relays, one at a time, until the light goes out. Then you have isolated the bad circuit.

If this does not work, you may have a bad starter motor solenoid. Try disconnecting the starter cable and test again.

this could be the alternator...the alternator has a diode bridge circuit..with this defective you will get a current drain thru this alternator circuit...

to check for this you will need to measure the current drain after the battery is fully charged..using a meter that can measure dc current you can find what is drawing power when key off...


removal of the red alternator wire then with engine key off measure for current flow should be low Milli Amps...between this wire and alternator connection..if this reads hundreds of MA or a few amps then this alternator needs a new bridge regulator diode ckt..///new alternator.
