91 Camry Automatic seatbelt

The automatic seatbelt on the drivers side had stopped working and the passenger side had become intermittent.

I opened up the wiring harness coming out of the drivers door and found multiple broken wires, replacing those took care of the issue on that side.

I opened up the wiring harness coming out of the passenger door and found several cracked but no obviously broken wires. I replaced the cracked wires and all seemed well for about a week at which point the seatbelt went back to functioning intermittently.I tend to think the wires in the door are no longer the issue as the seatbelt failed to retract over multiple engine start stops spanning several days time and then it started working again without the door having been opened or closed.

I reopened the passenger door wiring harness and found no cracked or broken wires. I ohmed out the wires and found no opens. Any thoughts as to the culprit?

After reading through the above links and reviewing the logic of how the seatbelts work I opened up the passenger side and found the back (retracted) limit switch stuck on. Cleaned up the switch, put a little WD40 on the plunger, reinstalled and it has worked so far through multiple cycles so I am going to optimistically call it fixed!

Good for you!!!! Does the '91 have those "gotcha" belts where you close the door and the shoulder belt automatically straps you in?

Hope your repair fixes the problem for you permanetly, and also that it stops raining in the near future too! (I saw VA tonignt on the news! Geeeeze!)

91 is part of the group that has the "gotcha" belts. I had not had any previous troubles but had "heard" many horror stories. The two links in the previous post are fantastic breakdowns of how the system works and where to find trouble spots beyond just the wiring harness between the door and the body.

Thanks for your good wishes - the rain seems to have finally stopped although the river has gone from 450cfs to 7250cfs so there is considerable flooding of low areas (I am still dry), the sun is coming out and my seatbelts continue to work. Life is good and I'm shooting for another 100K miles in the Camry.
