How to represent Candy Apple Red

All,

Does anyone have an idea as to how to reproduce this finish?

Usually candy finishes are a 3 stage process. After primer you apply a base colour, usually metallic. It can be silver, gold anything really. Once this has dried you spray a clear over the top, the difference being it is tinted with a colour and this can also be any colour. It creates a depth and a sort of shimmering effect to the paint. The paint can look different colours from different angles. Sometimes the tinted clear dries matt and you need to apply clear over the top for the shine. I used candy paint on my Suzuki Hayabusa build. It looks different colours in different light conditions. That Ferrari you posted a link to looks like the colour used on the F2007 later in the season.

What i would do is lay down a white primer, then base coat of gold, then a candy apple red color, then clear coat.
Or
White primer,silver,clear red, and then clear.

Also if i was you i would do trial runs on plastic spoons or other scrap bodies. So that way you can see how the color looks like before you paint the actual car. Always practice before spraying the actual item.

Im thinking of trying this myself with the silver to see how it turns out.

I've tried Zero Candy Red over a Mica Silver base, and that came out quite nice. I've not tried to matt coat though! I have a Shelby GT500 (2007) which I'm planning to paint so will let you know how it comes out... I've not tried the gold base yet though...

The best "candy" finish I've ever done was done with some of the CHEAP testors paints. I used black primer, gold (I used 2 bottles of gold, I let the flakes settle to the bottom of one, dumped out the carrier, then dumped the flakes and the other bottle of paint into another, larger bottle to accommodate the extra flakes, just to make the paint extra shimmery) then a clear over the gold, followed by ruby red metal flake and testors clear. All from the little 1/4 oz bottles. It was the best paintjob I have ever done, didn't even need to polish it. Then I gave it to a friend because it was a replica of his 1:1 busa. I wish I would have atleast taken pics of it, GRRRR!!! Then about a month later, he asks if I could fix the paint because his son took it to his college dorm and dropped it, and I was like...uhh, no.

That's actually an interesting observation - I was talking to some of the model car guys at a show recently, and they commented that they get very little attention because nobody (not even other modellers) realises how much work goes into a nice model, or how unique each one is...!

If I may, I would like to point out that that die cast doesn't appear to have a metallic base. Most metallic paints out there are metallic. What I mean by that is that the silver paints have little flakes in them. If you don't want this may I suggest using that "chrome" bumper paint. You will find it with the dupli-color paints. Comes in gold also. Its enamel, but you can use Tamiya clear red and clear yellow acrylic over it to get close to the effect you are after.

I'll try to answer. .the best way is

1. Primer - Doesn't matter if it is white or gray
2. Base Coat - You can choose between silver or gold it depends on your style
3. Candy Red Coat - Candy paint it's just like a clear coat with some pigment you can make it at home just adding some red, for instance, into your clear coat till you got the right color you want, i use to buy paints from HOK
4. Clear Coat - You don't need to apply clear coat before this step.

Just for a tip, if you want to paint with a blue candy, do not apply it over gold base otherwise you'll get a quite strange result :)

Thanks guys. I have been going down the spoon route (that sounds vaguely naughty!!) - I've tried the candy red over silver which looked quite nice, but I've not tried over gold yet. I do have another batch of tests to paint up so I'll try that next. I also want to try a matt finish and see what that looks like...

I did gray primer, Metallic silver base, then clear red on top. I added some black to the clear red to make it a little bit darker, then sprayed normal clear over the top of that.

Came out pretty good i think.

Next time i might try the gold base and see what that turns out like.

After doing this process, it makes me think, "can you do this with other colors?"

Say add a bit of green to a clear, and have a candy apple green?
Any one tried this?

It looks good!! I think that Zero Paints do a Candy Apple Green as well, although I could be wrong..

What I've been looking for is Candy Orange - I want to do the Supra from TFATF and the color is quote as Lamborghini Arancio Atlas with several coats of Candy Orange on top - but I can't find a source for it! I've tried Tamiya Clear Orange which didn't work - will have to see if there's an Alclad II Clear Orange...
