I just bought a 1999 Explorer Sport 4X4. It has 2 issues
#1- Check engine light is on it shows code P0409, I understand it's EGR related. Can someone give me some direction as to what to do and in what order, to try to get this problem corrected.
#2- Vehicle has a dent about the size of your fist on the left front fender. The airbag light is on. The inspection station (in High Point NC) says that is doesn't effect it passing inspection. BUT, 2 things #1, I don't want the light on at all. #2, I don't feel comfortable, about it being on, because what if that means it's going to blow up in my face at 60 MPH on I-40.
The air bag has NOT been deployed.
I bought it at a repo auction.
I have a new fender in PERFECT condition to put on it.
Another question it has a selector switch from auto to low to hi (for the 4X4) does this mean it automatically engages 4X4 when on auto or is it just free wheeling in this position.:screwy:

Are you sure the code is a P0409? My Ford manual goes from P0402 to P0411. Read the codes again. If the code is a P1409, it is possibly the EGR Vacuum Regulator Solenoid.
Also on the Air Bag light, a high end scan tool will read the codes to tell you what the problem is. You may need to go to a dealer or a reputable shop and have them read the code for you. Post back the code number and we can help A lot of times the passenger airbag light will be blown and set a code. Let us know.
And yes, you have full time 4WD. If it is in auto, it will divert power to all 4 wheels when it detects slippage in one wheel.
