speedometer inoperative

I have a 2002 Mercury 4 door sable gs. with 70,000 miles. The speedometer got jumpy on a road trip and at the next startup it has quit all together. Is this mechanical or electrical or both. Is there a cable or sensor. Where can I get a schematic.
